There is a lot of vocabulary in English, but in terms of classifying groups of words, English vocabulary is divided into 8 groups of words which are often termed parts of speech.
What are the word categories of parts of speech? Check out the following explanation below:
Noun
This type of word is a word related to objects and people which is generally preceded by the particles an, a, and the before the noun word. Nouns often referred to as nouns have a broad meaning, nouns can be living objects (have lived) or non-living objects (lifeless), moving objects and immovable objects, and tangible (visible) or invisible objects. Noun (noun) in English means the name of a person, object, animal, or thought. In other words, something tangible is called a noun. Nouns are often used as the subject of a sentence. Most nouns have a singular or plural form, which can be preceded by an article and/or one or more adjectives.
Pronoun
This type of word functions to replace the noun. Aims to avoid repetition of the same noun in the sentence.
Take an example:
Riko wears a jacket. His jacket is new.
In the sentence, the word Riko functions as a noun, while the word His functions as a pronoun.
A verb
Is a verb that is used to show actions or conditions. The verb in the sentence functions as a form of predicate (verb) in a sentence. In Indonesian, we recognize several elements in forming sentences, namely Subject, Predicate, Object, and Description. In English, the rules in forming this sentence also follow the same element pattern as Indonesian, the only difference is the term and the use and change in the predicate form.
Adverb
It is a word used to explain an adjective, a verb, and the adverb itself. An adverb can be added to a verb to change its meaning. Usually, an adverb tells information about when, how, and in what way, or shows how the action is performed as a whole.
In general, many adverbs end in ly- especially for words that are used to express how an action happened.
Although many adverbs end in -ly- many do not. For example: fast, never, well, very, most, least, more, less, now, far, and there.
Adjective
Adjectives are words that describe nouns and pronouns. In the meaning of the word, the word adjective means adjective, which is a word that concerns the nature of someone or something from nouns both living and inanimate objects, and so on. Adjectives are always positioned before a noun which is often called an adjective clause. Examples: a new book, the old house, etc.
Preposition
A preposition is a word used to explain to show the relationship between a noun and other words in a sentence. It comes before a noun or pronoun to form a phrase that modifies other words in a sentence. Therefore, a preposition is always part of a prepositional phrase. It almost always functions as an adjective or adverb. Examples of words used: Are in, On, At, Through, With, By, Of, About, Above, Across, etc. Prepositions also function as word formations of nouns and pronouns that form phrases that explain verbs, nouns, and adjectives. Example: Under the bridge, Because of you, Near the window.
Conjunction is a type of word that connects words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. Some examples of this type of word are: and, but, because, so, yet, nor, for, and others.
An interjection is a word used to express the emotions or sentiments of the speaker. Example: Ouch! It's hurt, Wow! It's amazing, Umm! I don't agree with that. The interjection is usually placed at the beginning of the sentence.
