In the sense of the word pronoun, a pronoun is a word. Pronouns are words that can be used as pronouns when naming people or things. Pronouns function to avoid repeating the same name of the subject (someone/something being discussed in the sentence). Pronouns are parts of speech.
Examples of pronouns in sentences:
There is a new student. The student's name is Andi. Andi is a hardworking and smart student. Andy is always on time. Andi always does Andy's homework.
There are many Andi words in the sentence because Andi is the subject being talked about in the sentence.
In English, this is not correct, so we replace the word Andi with the pronoun He in the third-person singular male sentence. Then the sentence becomes:
There is a new student. The student's name is Andi. He is a hardworking and smart student. He is always on time. He always does his homework.
There are five kinds of pronouns in English. These are:
1. The subjective pronoun. These are pronouns that act as the subject (I, You, They, We, etc.) in a sentence.
For example:
We take the bus to school. We take the bus to school.
I bought three tickets to Bandung. I bought three tickets to Bandung.
2. The objective pronoun. This is a pronoun that functions as the object of the sentence (I, you, us, etc.).
Example:
Sinta is going with him to Semarang.
Sinta is going with him to Semarang.
He is going to join the soccer team. He is going to join the soccer team.
3. The possessive adjective before a noun. This is a possessive pronoun used in front of a noun. The words I, yours, our, their, and others are used to indicate ownership.
Example: This is our house. This is our house.
4. The possessive pronoun after a noun. These are pronouns that indicate ownership and are used after a noun in a sentence. Examples of possessive pronouns include mine, yours, ours, theirs, and others.
Example sentences:
The time is yours. The time is yours.
This book is mine. This book is mine.
These pencils are theirs. These pencils are theirs.
5. Reflexive pronouns. These are pronouns that function as a form of reflection (a reflection of the subject's state), where they show what the subject is doing, thinking, feeling, etc. in the sentence. Examples of this type of pronoun are I, yourself, us, and others.
Example sentences:
The teacher reads the text himself.
The teacher reads the text himself.
I do all this work by myself. I do all these things by myself.
For a more complete explanation of each of the above pronouns, I will discuss them separately in the next discussion post.
